The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education will host its 18th Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy on April 16. The annual event honors leading philanthropists and their partnership in education, recognizing recipients for outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Virginia’s 23 community colleges, their respective foundations, and the VFCCE.

One of the inspiring recipients is former Vice President of Academics, Students, and Workforce Development Dr. Muriel B. Mickles, nominated by Central Virginia Community College (CVCC). Mickles, a cornerstone of the CVCC community since 1968, initially joined as a student in the institution’s second-ever class. Through her remarkable tenure, she navigated diverse roles from student and staff member to counselor, dean, and ultimately vice president. Her extraordinary journey embodies resilience, dedication, and an ardent passion for education.

Mickles has been a pillar of the college’s growth and evolution, lending her expertise across diverse roles while fervently advocating for the betterment of individuals and communities alike. She retired in December 2023 after 52 years of dedication and transformative contributions to the college.

“Dr. Muriel B. Mickles has been an invaluable asset to CVCC, leaving an indelible impact on our institution,” said CVCC President Dr. John Capps. “Her tireless dedication to student success and unwavering passion for education will resonate within our halls for generations to come.  CVCC extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mickles for her unparalleled service.”

More than 430 philanthropists have earned the prestigious award for their contributions and commitment to Virginia’s community colleges. This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders have collectively contributed $17 million.
