On Thursday, May 9, the Mellon Research Fellows students showcased and were celebrated for their remarkable achievements through a display of student posters. This is an end-of-year recognition of the capstone projects from the Mellon Research Fellows, a part of the Pathways to VCU program. Each poster serves as a testament to the dedication, creativity, and scholarly rigor embodied by our students. From exploring the nuances of historical narratives to delving into the depths of artistic expression, these posters encapsulate the diverse array of research endeavors undertaken by our Fellows.  Throughout the academic year, our Fellows have flourished under the guidance of dedicated mentors and faculty members. The Mellon Pathways Program has provided a nurturing environment for intellectual growth and collaboration, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and encouraging innovative thinking.

On average, transfer students take five years and 143 credits to complete a bachelor’s degree, compared with 126 hours and four years for indigenous students. The dream of completing a bachelor’s degree in four years at an affordable rate is complicated because of repetitive coursework, community college courses transferring as elective credit, limited partnerships between institutions, and inadequate advising for students who wish to transfer. Thus, there are opportunities to strengthen and streamline the transfer process for Virginia students.

The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education championed this initiative in 2018 with the initial grant request from the Mellon Foundation. With its first cohort in 2019, the Pathways to VCU program is dedicated to providing seamless pathways and enhanced student support for students from Brightpoint Community College and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College pursuing arts and humanities programs with the intention of transferring to VCU.

Heartfelt gratitude was extended to all those who have contributed to the success of the Mellon Pathways Program – from faculty mentors to program coordinators and, most importantly, the Mellon Research Fellows. Their dedication, passion, and perseverance are admirable. The Mellon Pathways Program stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, mentorship, and academic excellence.
