May is a time of commemoration across the community college system. The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) brought together its 2023-2024 Fellows cohort for a two-day leadership capstone event celebration. Thanks to generous partners Anthem Healthkeepers Plus, Potomac Health Foundation, and Virginia Banking Association Education Foundation (VBA), 32 students were recognized for their academic achievements and service contributions to their communities. Students reflected on their fellowship journey, sharing how the experience has made a profound impact on their lives.
Fellowships are awarded to second-year students with excellent academic records who demonstrate leadership potential in designated fields of study. In addition to financial awards to help advance their academic studies, Fellows participate in special activities, including conferences, meetings, and presentations designed to highlight aspects of leadership in the public and private sectors.
Along with the recognition, VBA representatives spoke to the Fellows about financial education for their futures. Fellows also heard from Virginia Community Colleges Human Resources Consultant Lauren Philip on using storytelling in their elevator pitch to leverage themselves in the job market. To end the celebration, fellows went on a guided tour of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the museum and the art it houses.
